HIGHLIGHTS

A term used when a certain amount of texture or a variety of colours are applied to parts of your hair using foiling or streaking techniques to lighten natural or artificially coloured hair.

LOW LIGHTS

Lowlights are the opposite of highlights and are mainly used when we want to deepen or change reflects in light hair. Lowlights are an option if you want to disguise grey hair but not cover or commit to re-growth. We can decide on a colour that is the same as your natural colour and blend out some of your greys, or we can use lowlights as a subtle or very strong contrast in between lighter pieces of hair.

FOILS

Foils give total control to use various tones or shades thick or thin, natural or dynamic, dependant on your preference. Foils can be used on partial areas of the head to exaggerate or accentuate a haircut. The amount of foils applied will depend on your hair cut, the effect we want to achieve and how much existing colour you have in your hair.

Full head: strands spaced throughout your whole head (what you usually have the first time you try this type of colouring)

Half head: if your hair is long or to add texture and contrast between the nape area and the top of your hair. Half head is also more economical than full head foils as the labour and the colour mixed is less

Crown and Parting: this is when you need a quick set of highlights or an emergency touch-up between a full head or half head service.

STREAKS

If you have existing artificially darkened hair and want to go lighter, this would generally be the safest technique. We are able to apply the highlight bleach to all the hair that has been pulled through the cap at the one time, which gives us a little more control on areas of application, an even level of lightness and allows no colour to touch the scalp

If you are rushed for time or have a limited budget, then streaks could be used to obtain similar results to foils.

CLIP EXTENSIONS

Locking clips are sewn onto human hair wefts. They snap closed into natural hair to add additional length or fullness. Apply and remove as often as you like.

Disadvantages

• They can loosen or fall out if pulled heavily

FUSION TECHNIQUE

Small pieces of 100% human hair are attached with a bonding adhesive from a thermal gun, forming a semi-permanent bond (hair to hair). This technique can be used to create thickness or length.

• Extensions can be coloured, styled and treated like your own hair
• Have as many or as few as you like
• They add body, volume and length

Disadvantages

MINI MICRO BEAD

Small pieces of 100% human hair are attached with a small plastic sheath that fits onto your existing hair using a clamp implement. This forms a semi-permanent bond (hair to hair). This technique can be used to create thickness or length.

Advantages

• They look natural
• You can easily add some contrast colour strands
• Extensions can be coloured, styled and treated like your own hair
• Have as many or as few as you like
• They add body, volume and length

Disadvantages

• Individual bonds can fall out from repeated heat exposure eg blow-drying, straightening irons or tongs
• Bonds can also fall out if pulled (they aren’t as durable as Fusion Extensions
• They are heavy if you need a full head application

SHORT HAIR

Women and men with short hair forget that they need to maintain that cut to keep hair manageable. Short hair really needs to be cut every 4 to 6 weeks (some of our male clients come every 2 weeks).

Dependant on the season and what activities you do (sport, gym, swimming) short hair really needs to be looked after. Treatments are important and another thing that people do when they have short hair is wash it more than is necessary.

GREY HAIR

At some stage in our lives, both men and women will experience the on-set of grey hair.

Contrary to popular belief, greying hair is not always related to age. Some people start to grey in their early 20’s or 30’s; this is called premature greying.

Everybody is different but the pigment of our hair is generated in the same way. Initially, hair is white. The cells in our hair follicles called “Melanocytes” generate pigments; the main one being Melanin. This gives our hair its colour. In general, the more melanin present, the darker the hair colour.

When these Melanocytes stop producing the pigment the result is transparent hair. The transparent hair against your healthier, darker hair gives the appearance of Grey Hair. In reality, the hair is not grey but transparent.

The main reason for our hair turning grey is heredity. Just another thing to blame on your parents! But this is not always the case.

The pigment in the hair shaft is generated from cells at the base of the root of the hair and as we get older these cells start producing less pigment until there is no pigment at all in the hair and we end up with the transparent hair.

There is no scientific evidence that any specific diet, herb, supplement or natural product can prevent or reverse grey hair.

Some people believe that if they pluck out the grey hair “coloured” strands will grow back – this is not true. Grey hair stays grey!

Grey hair can be harder to colour because it is more resistant to hair colour due to a decreased amount of melanin in the strand and it becomes translucent.

Grey hair can increase if you are deficient in Vitamin B12 or if you suffer from a thyroid imbalance. Smokers are also more likely to have grey hair because it robs the oxygen levels from the blood.

Hair cannot turn grey overnight. As you age, the production of your colour pigment slows down and grey hair begins to appear.

You can get the early onset of grey hair from Alopecia Areata induced by trauma, bad health or similar conditions. This happens when thicker, darker hair falls out and the hair that grows back has been weakened and melanin production decreased.

HAIR CYCLE

Each hair follicle produces a number of hairs throughout your life. The first hair grows from the follicle approximately 1cm per month for about two to six years. After this time the hair will die and no longer grow and it will then sit dormant in the follicle for a further three months. After this three month interval the new hair starts to grow out of the follicle pushing the old one out. This is a normal process that continues throughout your life. The average person loses about 50 hairs a day.

GENETIC HAIR LOSS IN WOMEN & MEN

Androgenetic alopecia is a medical term for common baldness and is caused by hormones in genetically susceptible people. Inheritance of androgenetic alopecia is uncertain but it can be inherited from either parent.

Hair loss can begin at any age after puberty. Once it begins it progresses relentlessly leading to advanced baldness over a variable period of time - as short as 5 years and as long as 20 years and often occurring in fits and bursts.

It is imperative that you don’t commence any hair loss treatment available at Escapade without first having a full consultation with our highly trained Creative Director, Charlie Rizk.

NUTRITIONAL DEFICIENCY (DIET)

Sudden weight loss can precipitate hair depreciation and chronic starvation may result in dry, lifeless, fine hair. Many medications and chronic disease treatments can also cause hair loss.

Lack of minerals or vitamins play a huge role in the maintenance and strength of healthy hair:

• lack of Zinc
• Iron
• Folic Acid
• B1 and B6 (lack of these 2 vitamins increases hair loss)
• B12 (feeds the roots)
• Biotin
• Omega 3
• Vitamin C stimulates the hair growth and regulates the generation of pigments in the hair strand

Many photo nutrient deficiencies have been known to increase hair loss or decrease the strength and condition of hair.

Post operative hair loss is a non-scarring occipital alopecia that follows prolonged surgery. Caused by a combination of pressure during prolonged operations and exacerbated by hypothermia.

The following are some causes for post operative hair loss:

• General Anaesthetic can play an essential role in hair reduction
• Menopause (changes to hormone levels in the body)
• Severe chronic illness
• Chemotherapy and Radiation treatments

Quite a few medications have also been reported to cause severe hair loss, although hair loss will cease once the medication or treatment has ended (in most cases).

Complete spontaneous recovery generally occurs quickly as most of the hairs have only fractured and are still in the anagen stage.

PRE OR POST NATAL HAIR LOSS

Numerous women experience excessive amounts of hair loss either during pregnancy, after the birth, or while breastfeeding.

In many cases it has a lot to do with nutritional factors as well as the fact that towards the end of the pregnancy your hair will grow approximately 10% faster than normal. Therefore once shedding commences which could be from 3 to 12 months after giving birth, it will be more noticeable.

Collagen hardening interferes with the normal functioning of follicles. The thickened hair roots prevent the hair bulb from returning back to its place in the skin. So, although new hair is produced, it’s not able to settle and the growth phase is disrupted.

We are making a distinction between hair loss of short and long duration depending on the type. If, for example, stress, seasonal influences, pregnancy or medical treatment (i.e. prescribed medication) are the reasons for hair loss, then normally one treatment is enough for your hair to recover. It is also sufficient for the hair root nourishment to reach and repair the damaged hair follicle.

Each Kerastase Aminexil treatment system comprises 42 ampoules. Apply one full ampoule to your scalp every day for six consecutive weeks and massage in.

Containing Stemoxydine, this hair treatment programme contains 30 ampoules. You can apply to wet or dry hair.

It will last for up to 2 months on virgin hair and 3-4 months on chemically treated hair (subject to using a sulphate-free shampoo). The Keratin Treatment is not a relaxer or “straightener” – it is a treatment that naturally straightens your hair and can be used over existing permanent straighteners, relaxed or coloured and chemically treated hair.

WHAT IS KERATIN?
Keratin is a type of protein high in sulphur and the amino acid, cystine. This makes it tough, elastic and insoluble. Keratin is the main protective substance in our hair, skin and nails and is derived from pure wool harvested from sheep.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
Keratin has strong protective qualities that improve the hair both inside and out. The unique biopolymer ingredient is virtually a “liquid form of hair” that gently blends with the hair on your head. Smaller Keratin molecules penetrate the hair cortex improving and repairing the quality of the hair from the inside. Keratin fills in the gaps between the cuticle and the hair shaft and is then sealed with a high heat flat iron. This eliminates the frizz, adds strength and elasticity and at the same time achieves the straightening effect because the added weight of the Keratin smoothes and weighs down each strand of hair. CAN I COLOUR MY HAIR?
Absolutely! If you want colour or highlights it is best to do them before the Keratin Treatment because this will prolong your colour result. When the treatment is being applied, a high heat flat iron is used which crystallizes the product onto the hair, thus sealing the cuticle. If you want to colour afterwards you need to wait at least 3 weeks because the cuticle layer won’t be porous enough to absorb the colour. Cutting should be done after the Keratin Treatment so that dead ends can be trimmed.

BASIC DO’S AND DON’TS
DO (three days following treatment)
1. Wear hair down at all times
2. Use blow dryer or flat iron as needed (in case your hair gets wet during the first 3 days)
3. Wear a silk scarf to pull your hair away from your face

DON’T (three days following treatment)
1. Don’t wash your hair
2. Don’t tie hair into a pony tail
3. Don’t use hair clips
4. Don’t use hair bands
5. Don’t sweat – avoid working out
6. Don’t put hair behind your ears
7. Don’t use bobby pins

We have a tiered pricing structure for our cutting and styling so you have the choice to pay the price you want dependant on the level of experience of your chosen stylist.

The levels are: Creative Director (Owner) 25+ years; Head Stylists 20+ years; Advanced Stylists 8-15 years; Stylists 3-6 years

Our colour pricing is also based on the amount of product used; not the length of your hair. Someone with long, fine hair might actually need less product than a client with thick, short hair. If unsure you are welcome to ask for a quote during your consultation process.
